Starting a successful cold email campaign

A successful email marketing campaign can be broken down into three steps:

  1. Acquire a list of companies to email. (You can use LimeLeads)
  2. Create a series of emails to send.
  3. Send out the emails and deal with responses.

I’ll walk you through how I follow these exact steps to acquire customers at our own company. Yes, we do use LimeLeads to sell LimeLeads!

Step 1 of 3: Acquire a list of companies to email.

At LimeLeads, we’ve discovered that one of our target customers are Marketing Consultants.

So now I need to find a few thousand Marketing Consultants to try and pitch LimeLeads to. Luckily, LimeLeads solves this problem.

Go place a free trial really quickly and come right back, it’ll take 20 seconds. And it’s free.

And we’re done with step 1. Wasn’t that easy?

Step 2 of 3: Create a series of emails to send.

Over the years I’ve learned that there truly is an art and science to writing effective emails. There are countless articles written on the subject.

Just don’t get stuck overthinking it – get something out, see how it does, and iterate. I challenge you to write a first draft in the next hour.

Step 3 of 3: Send out the emails; deal with responses.

You’ll want at least some level of automation for this step. Here are a few good tools, they all work just fine.

  • QuickMail.io (Free trial, then paid. Very easy to get started.)
  • ToutApp (Free trial, then paid. More robust.)
  • Yesware (Free trial, then paid. Augments gmail.)

Once you load up one of these tools with leads and an email template, it’ll start sending the emails and letting you know when someone responds.

That’s all there is to it!

If you haven’t already, it takes 20 seconds to start a get started. Let me know what you think in the comments, and I’ll respond to everyone.
